IB Diploma: Worldwide recognition and assessment

International Baccalaureate – Certificate Recognition for Students from Abroad – by Moritz Bausch, graduate of Rossell – Independent Boarding School in Lancashire, Fleetwood near Blackpool/UK 2020.

For the winter semester 2020/21, due to the pandemic, a modified processing principle of the report evaluation by „uni-assist e. V.“ for the admission of international students in Germany has been applied.

The Federal Government announced this and emphasized that the aim was to process as many applications as possible rather than to process them according to the number of applications received. As a result of industrial action and strikes in the affected regions, the processing time for many applications, especially in August and September, exceeded the regular time window of four to six weeks. A processing time of eight weeks was only exceeded in individual cases. The Federal Government emphasizes that sovereign decisions on admission to studies are the sole responsibility of the universities and that they are accountable for these decisions in accordance with state law. The important, but only supporting activity of the work and service center „uni-assist“ is determined by the statutes of the association and includes the administrative pre-processing and examination of study applications for the almost 180 member universities.

Effects of the worldwide Corona Pandemic

The system has apparently worked, but at the same time has led to numerous employees at „uni-assist“ complaining about a high workload. Seasonal workers had been dismissed during the Corona crisis and the trade union ver.di had complained that many employees were employed in semi-legal chain contracts. The recognition of foreign educational qualifications is necessary and purposeful in order to strengthen Germany as a center of knowledge and study.

International Baccalaureate – what is it?

The International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognized Swiss school-leaving certificate awarded by the Geneva-based organization du Baccalauréat International. In Germany, the following applies: „An IB diploma is generally recognized throughout Germany as a university entrance qualification if the conditions of the resolution of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany of March 10, 1986 as amended on March 7, 2019 are fulfilled. Until the examination date 2020, the IB diploma opens up direct access to higher education for all subjects if all requirements are met. Depending on the subjects proven in the IB diploma, from the examination date 2021 onwards there will be either a direct admission with free choice of subject or a.“. /(Quote DAAD: German Academic Exchange Service)

„The International Baccalaureate Diploma is a unique educational qualification, offered by over 200 schools in the UK and recognized worldwide as the „gold standard“ of education. From the foundation phase of the first years to the primary school programme and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, the emphasis is on creating comprehensive learners who are explorative, open-minded and independent The IBO is a foundation that has developed and provides international education. Rossall-School is an authorized school that offers the IB Diploma to its students,“ said Miss Bethan Jones, Director of IB and Head of English at Rossall-School.

Why would I take another chance to do the IB Diploma at a boarding school?

My experience: „Of course it was difficult when the Corona Pandemic ended my boarding school stay and that of all the other international students so abruptly, and at first we thought about how to get the diploma. But the people in charge at Rossall School put this into practice immediately: online learning worked immediately after the slightest teething problems and I successfully passed my IB diploma despite Corona. In my time as a boarding school student, Rossall is a place for me with which strong emotions are connected. Its location alone, directly on the coast of the Irish Sea, encourages curiosity and a thirst for adventure.

The campus is reminiscent of the stories of Harry Potter, but the architecture creates an atmosphere of tranquility and tradition. The extensive 160-hectare campus offers space for sporting activities as well as space for exploration and discovery, and international students soon find that they belong. Together with the boarding school and day students, they learn, grow and live.

Rossall’s Headmaster Mr. Quartermain said: „We do not pursue a selective learning policy, but our goal is to get the best out of the students with their abilities. Year after year our students achieve excellent exam results and 86 per cent of our students are studying at a UK university, with a further 9 per cent studying abroad. In the exceptional circumstances of 2020 our students have achieved excellent results. This year they have even achieved some of the highest marks in recent Rossall history, as well as taking courses at top universities in the UK and abroad. We see Rossall as a holistic experience for all students and the Rossall team. Our diverse range of extracurricular activities, the vibrant international mix of students, coupled with the opportunities to learn and explore across borders, enables us to develop the most valuable gift: character. We wish the students to discover and develop their talents during their time at Rossall.

Conclusion: Is an International School Certificate worthwhile – springboard to the global market

The world is growing together and companies are also becoming more global. Understanding and the understanding and learning of cultures is necessary to gain a foothold in the global market. Learning intercultural skills and language skills are becoming prerequisites. International schools and international degrees offer a head start and are considered a good alternative: investing in education creates opportunities for everyone.
